Your What Defines Your Who

Exodus 15:26 “If you diligently heed the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals you.”
Keep this in mind: In the days leading up to this scripture, Moses, & the rest of Israel, was only a couple days into a bold & new wilderness walk. Egypt’s army had been completely destroyed @ the Red Sea & God’s children had just experienced one of the most awe inspiring events this world had ever seen. So far so good, right? But by the time we read this scripture, those events had all but been forgotten. For those of you who have never read about the Red Sea, then do yourself the service of going here before you continue reading. Now that we're all on the same page, try to imagine forgetting about the Red Sea! But 24, 48, maybe 72 hours after the Red Sea, Israel (God's people) had completely lost their awe for Him. They were no longer impressed with his recent display of wonder working power. They were now fixated on something much greater… Their next immediate need. What problem could have eclipsed the overwhelming power of Pharaoh's army? What forthcoming catastrophe could have overshadowed their near death days at the Red Sea? It was Water… Those people were thirsty & they were dying for/crying out/complaining of their need for a drink. In a way, this scenario seems to answer a question that often goes unspoken. The Question: What is your greatest need? The Answer: The one 1 am currently facing. I once heard a preacher say, "Stop telling your God about the size of your problems & start telling your problems about the size of your God." If we truely want to change our world, then I believe we must 1st change our mind. Instead of focusing on our lack in general, we need the Lord’s help to focus on our only way out… Faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, Hope in our Heavenly Father, & Love for His Holy Spirit. To fast track the story, God eventually led them through the place of bitter water to another place called Elim. There they found twelve wells of water and seventy palm trees. But what speaks loudest to me today is this. Once God satisfied their most basic & threatening need, He made a point to do 2 more things. 1. He identified himself 2. He dealt with their fickle faith.
Read it again, He said “For I am the LORD who heals you.”
He is completely aware of where we’ve been, where we are going, & what it will take to get there. But, His power is always available now. Aren’t you glad we serve a now God? He’s more than the God who has healed. He’s more than the God who will heal. I’m encouraged today that he’s the God who HEALS. He's the one who is currently & constantly healing! That's Good News! People, places, & things change, but God stays the same. No matter what you may be facing the same God who brought you this far will be the same God who takes you all the way. He does not change. Imagine if you were asked to introduce yourself to someone new today, but instead of telling them your name you had to tell them what you do. How would you complete this sentence… “Hello, I am the man/woman who …” That is exactly what God did with the Israelites. He set the record straight when He identified himself. It was as if He was saying, “You will know it’s me by what I do.” He’s a God of action & He knows that “It’s what you do that defines who you are.” We know what God Does... So what do you do?
My prayer for us today is that He will… “Heal our families. Heal our church. Heal our homes. Heal our hearts.” For he is the God who heals…

Full steam ahead,
PB

Raise The Roof

Together, we’re building the kingdom…
2011 has been a tremendous year of Reaching Relevant & Relational ministry, both inside and outside the church walls. We broke ground at Easter by holding 2 morning worship services and served the gospel to nearly 300 people in one day. Our Sunday worship experiences have been refreshed with a new level of Spirit-driven sensitivity & power. In the past 8 months, our children’s ministry has experienced a complete makeover… It received new leadership (Pastor Gavin), a new name (KidsWay), a new curriculum, a renovated auditorium, a new Sunday “Kid’s Church” format, a record attendance of 140+ at this summer’s VBS, and now it’s launching a brand new midweek outreach called… SURGE. These are exciting days for everyone connected to Kings Way.
Together, we’re Raising the Roof…
Last year I asked a small group of builders, who call Kings Way home, to identify the current and future maintenance issues facing our facilities & grounds. Making the list were items like replacing our washroom flooring, cleaning our carpets, maintaining our landscaping & new grass. But high on the list was the need for a brand new roof.
Together, we’re moving forward…
The new roof cost just over $32,000. We believe that with God's help, every extra penny will be raised between now and Christmas 2011. I am asking every giver, every family, and every friend of Kings Way to make a financial commitment, above your normal tithing (giving), toward our Raising the Roof campaign. Let's settle this new debt & let's continue to build the kingdom of God in the valley and around the world...
Commitment cards are available @ the Welcome Window located in the main lobby. I am asking you to complete the card and pass it in during the offering. You are welcome to make a onetime gift or regular contributions between now & Christmas. If you have any questions related to this project, then please contact myself in the church office, or our Finance Committee Chair, Dan Cameron.
Together, we believe for more…
Raising the Roof is the beginning of something new @ Kings Way. As the ministry of Kings Way Assembly grows, we will be faced with fresh challenges, or what I like to call “good” problems. In the not so distant future the children’s ministry will outgrow their current space, the parking lot will struggle with more congestion, and we’ll need to explore expanding our current sanctuary or holding 2 morning services… In addition, we’ll continue praying for the sick, paying down debt, seeking & saving the lost, supporting local & foreign missionaries, building healthy homes, reaching our community through relevant outreach/ministry, and expanding our outreach services through our two Care Centres & the Kings Way LifeCare Alliance.
2011 has been flooded with miraculous stories of life change & God encounters. Let’s all be a part of this financial miracle & together help ensure the miracles @ Kings Way continue for many generations to come…
Plug In…
On Sunday, September 11th, we’ll launch a new & sobering teaching series titled True Religion (James 1:27). Also on that Sunday we’ll take time for our much needed Back to School Prayer. Later that evening, our team of student missionaries will invite us all back to the church to hear the stories, see the pictures, and learn all about what God did in & through our team while they reached many lives in Lantz, NS.

You'd Better Believe

Welcome to another beautiful day in the neighborhood. Good weather like this helps to keep the rough weather in perspective. When Ruth & I were living in Florida/Georgia, Pastor Doug would often tell me, “Bryan, you can’t fully appreciate these nice days until you’ve experienced some bad ones.” He must have felt we were guilty of taking our southern climate for granted. Perhaps he was right.
The humbled residents of Joplin, Missouri understand rough weather. I have wondered what was life like in the days, even moments, leading up to the horrendous storm that touched down & leveled their community 10 days ago. The twister that touched down on May 22, 2011 was not the typical tornado; It was as big as they get, a class EF5 tornado. An EF5 is able to sustain winds of up to 200 mph (321.8688 kilometers p/h). I am sure by now you have heard, if not, seen the startling reports of the wide-spread devastation. But even as the death toll climbed again yesterday, the sad truth is, many people have already moved on... At 3,000 clicks away, Joplin is simply out of sight & out of mind.
The truth is, if folks are not in a storm, then a storm is most definitely coming. My prayer is that we would work hard to prepare for our personal storms & for the storms of others. To do that we must be ready for some difficult work. Jesus outlines the type of work required in John 6, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.” ”Believe” is a Greek word, pisteuo, meaning - to have faith in, or upon. Mark 9:22 tells the story of a father who was dealing with limited faith (belief). His son had suffered violent attacks & oppression at the hands of demonic spirits. The desperate father spoke to Jesus and said… “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” ” ‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for him who believes.” Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” The truth is we all wrestle with the limits in our lives. But like this father, we too must learn to lean “completely” on the Lord. When we find ourselves face to face with our personal limitations & lack, the safest place anyone can be is in the presence of Jesus.
If we are going to be led by the Lord then we must learn to lean on Him. I’ve been carrying a burden these past few days that we would lean more heavily on the Lord. That’s not to say we don’t lean on Him now, but it is to say we must lean on him completely. The Holy Spirit took me back to that familiar story in Ezra 8:21, “…And there by the Ahava Canal, I gave orders for all of us to fast and humble ourselves before our God. We prayed that he would give us a safe journey and protect us, our children, and our goods as we traveled.” We too are on a journey. The Lord is leading us to a place where we have never been before. Ezra and his people prepared for their journey and called on God for His divine involvement. We must be prepared ourselves by calling on the same God.
Ezra called on God to grant them His divine protection & safety over 1. Themselves 2. Their Children 3. Their Possessions/resources. They were very specific with God. Today, I am calling on us to pray a specific prayer… that we become Better Believers. Help our unbelief... Lord, attack our lack. By becoming Better believers, we become better leaders, we bear better fruit, we help build a better church, & we are equipped to better serve our community. In Ezra 8, it says “We prayed…” We know prayer works, so may we be people who pray. May it be said of us… “They prayed.” Let’s call on God and let’s live just as Jesus did when he was led in/out of the wilderness by the Holy Spirit. Oh that we would live in such a way that the comfort of the Holy Spirit alone would be our closest companion. Let’s live in the Comfort Zone.
Storms are strong, but God is stronger… He said that: “I will put together my church, a church so expansive with energy that not even the gates of hell will be able to keep it out.” (Matthew 16:18) The gates of Hell will come against each of our personal lives, families, & ministries. But as long as we are being built up in the body of Christ, we will win. I don’t know about you, but I like winning. In the article, The Joy & Journey of Church Planting, Jonathan Smith said, "I have heard people say, “God has not called me to be successful, just faithful.”” Smith goes on to say, “With all due respect I disagree. I believe God has called us to be both “faithful” & “fruitful.”” Today, I am praying that you will be found both faithful & fruitful.
God help us to help others; to be concerned for the storms others are facing. Help our unbelief. We are yours Lord. This is not our church, but yours. May we lead it well & hand it over to the next generations better than we found it. May we reach more people with the message of Hope that is found in Jesus Christ. May we reach out with the relevant relationship provided through the cross.
Becoming Better,
PB

Making Room

We've adjusted our regular Sunday schedule to make room for you this Easter. Instead of 1 service @ 10:30am, you'll have 2 services to choose from... @ 9am or 11am. The 2 services will consist of the same music & message. We’re making room to maximize our reach on a day that many people are looking for a church service to attend. Our volunteers will be out in full force, ready to serve & welcome every person who attends. Some people are making plans to “Sit 1/Serve 1.” If you are a regular @ Kings Way and would like help serve on this special Sunday, then please contact us @ info@kingswayassembly.ca, or call/stop by the office & speak with Robin or Angela.
Our prayer is that April 24th 2011 will be one of the greatest days of salvation the world has ever seen. Personally, I am believing for 50 people to make commitments to follow Christ in our services @ Kings Way.
Join me in prayer by asking/believing God for a great harvest. Whatever your plans are for that day, I am asking you to consider 3 things…
1. Involve - Personally Participate in this Risk @ Reaching: Pray, Attend, Volunteer.
2. Invite - Answer the question. “Who am I inviting to our Easter Sunday services?”
3. Engage - Every Kings Way’er is a deputized greeter. So let’s help every person encounter the Love Acceptance & Forgiveness of God’s presence & God’s people…
Making Room & Getting Ready,

The Great & The Greater

“I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.” John 14:12
In the 1st message of our TXT Messaging series, I referenced Jesus’ words from John 14. For most of my Christian life, I have heard preachers wax eloquent about these “greater things.” As a result, I became fixated/fascinated with the thought of what life might be like if I/we were to perform the “even greater things.” Maybe you can relate. Maybe you, like me, have innocently bypassed the first and most important half of this simply powerful scripture. Jesus said, “…anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing.”
These words were spoken at a critical hour in Jesus’ time on the earth. The most gruesome & glorious event, Calvary, was merely hours away. It was during this time that Jesus did/said many great things. He washed the disciples’ feet, & predicting that one of the twelve would betray Him and another would deny Him. He spoke in plan terms that He was The Way Truth & Life, the only door to a right relationship with our heavenly father. It was then that Jesus said, “…anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these…”
Matthew 9:35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.
Acts 10:38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.
A person needs not to look very far to find “the things” that Jesus was doing. Everywhere He went, He was caught in the act of Good Works. His words, of greater things, were 1st to His apostles and the works that they would do as described in Acts. William MacDonald, in his Believer's Bible Commentary, said it this way, "But we also read of greater miracles - such as the conversion of the three thousand on the day of Pentecost. Doubtless it was to the world-wide proclamation of the gospel, the salvation of so many souls, and the building of the church that the Lord referred to by the expression Greater Works." Listen to his next bold & beautifully balanced statement, "It is greater to save souls than to heal bodies... It was through the (Holy) Spirit's power that the apostles performed these greater miracles."
Jesus' only prerequisite to do "the things/greater things" was having faith, believing in Jesus. Do you have Faith in Jesus Christ? If your answer is no, then I encourage you to read the book of John and discover for yourself who this Jesus is and what He has already done for you. For those who have faith in Jesus; have you started doing what Jesus was doing? There is no greater persuit... My prayer is that you would begin today. Do what Jesus was/is doing. “…anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing.”
Galatians 6:9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Culture Club

Do you remember the very first time you experienced Culture Shock? My first exposure to a dramatic culture-shift took place on a short term mission trip to a small village outside the city of Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico. I won’t soon forget the sights & smells or the sense of risk & reward that we encountered crossing the border into Mexico. We had been invited to assist a local missionary couple build a small home for a family who had been living on the streets. It was the shock of my young life to see, first hand, people living in those conditions. But the ultimate shock of all was to learn that their greatest need was also my greatest need... and it’s your greatest need. The truth is this, we need Jesus more than we need anything else, and we must make a habit of giving Him away... Question: “When did you encounter a new culture, country, or find yourself in a place that was foreign to what you knew as normal?” Visit us online @ www.kingswayassmbly.ca, click on the Resources tab, & then click “Share Your Story.” We want to hear the story of how God impacted or shaped your otherwise normal life through your culture/missions experience.
It was on that trip that the Lord began to expand my heart for missions, outreach, and evangelism. I’ve come to realize 2 things about reaching the lost… #1 It has very little to do w/ me. #2 It has everything to do with me. Every believer must resign to the fact that they’ve got a part to play. That’s why we’re very excited to share a new mission opportunity w/ you. April 2011/Dominican Republic. Interested? Intrigued? Attend the last 4G (Go Night) of the month, on Nov. 28th @6pm, and you’ll know what we know. See you there...

How Could We Forget?

Remembrance Day 2010... how could we forget? We pause to remember the courageous men & women who have sacrificed so much to save so many. We salute them all for their selfless service to this great country and to the people who make Canada great. We pause to pray for our veterans who have helped navigate this country through World Wars, global threats, and acts of terror. We pause to pray for our active military soldiers and their families who are presently in harms way, maintaining peace, and promoting freedom. We pause in silence for those who have paid the ultimate price of laying down their lives so that our lives may be better. May we honour them by living abundant lives and maximizing every God-given opportunity afforded to us through their service. While the official national ceremonies are held at the National War Memorial in Ottawa, I encourage you to join in the celebrations taking place here in the valley.

The phrase “Remember Me” is spoken in both the Old & the New Testament of the Bible; most notably in 1Corinthians 19, when Jesus said… “Do this in remembrance of me.” Even as Jesus was on the cross, suspended between heaven & earth and positioned between two thieves, He too was asked to remember… Luke 23:42-43 Then he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when you come into Your Kingdom.” And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” On that most gruesome & glorious of days, Jesus remembered the one that many would rather forget. Aren’t you glad Jesus remembers the forgotten? And if you cling to Jesus for the salvation of your soul, He will remember you too... Ephesians 2:8-9. In this season of remembrance, forget not our soldiers & forget not your saviour.

DownRiver

The word “Continuing” simply means... “to persist in a process”. Each one of us are in God’s process & I pray that you resolve to remain in that process. The apostle Paul was writing to a church-in-process when, in Phil. 1:6, he said “...He who began a good work in you will complete it…” God had begun something among those people, and Paul was reminding them to remain poised in God’s process. When I was a kid, my family set out on what was supposed to be a lazy 3 hour tubing trip down the Frio River. We found out later that we had bad directions. We overshot our destination & kept traveling several miles upriver. As a result, our 3hr float quickly morphed into the 10hr tube trip of terror. As night fell on us tubers, we decided to leave the river. We wandered through the wilderness, stepped into a cactus patch, found shelter in an abandoned home, and well... long story short - we made it. As it turned out, if we had only continued down the river a few more minutes, we would have floated right into camp :)
Acts 2:42 “And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine & fellowship, in the breaking of bread, & in prayers.”
This fall has been an amazing season of process & progress. We’ve been experiencing the fruit of “continuing.” Now is not the time to pull back or to let off. But we must “persist in a process”. God is completing a good work in us and it will be to the benefit of the world that we each resolve to remain.

TXT Message

I’ll never forget hearing Pastor Jentezen Franklin passionately declare...“Whenever I read this book (the Bible), this book reads me!”
Question: Has the “Good Book” had a chance to study you lately? What is the most recent scripture that you’ve intentionally internalized or memorized. If one comes to mind, then I invite you to share it (scripture/story) with the staff by emailing it to me @ bryan@kingswayassembly.ca. The truth is, many Christ followers/Christians find that life has become too busy & overburdened to read any book, much less the Bible. If that describes your current state, then be encouraged... because the 2nd, 3rd, & 4th Sundays in November will be your opportunity to reclaim Biblical balance. Remember, one of the roles/functions of the Holy Spirit is to unlock/reveal the truth of God’s Word to every believer. If we have any desire to lead, then the Lord requires us to read. Leaders are readers, and during the month of November we’ll be digging into the Bible through a new sermon series called Text Messaging. More than 82 million people send/receive text messages, but the Holy Bible is the only relevant & life changing text w/ a message that matters. Psalm 119:11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. May dad says, “Practice what you preach.” So... I’ve challenged our staff to memorize/hide 2 Corinthians chapter 4. Now I challenge you to come & journey with us; step up to the challenge. If 2 Cor. 4 is too much for you, then start with John 11:35. Start where you are & start today.

This Might Hurt

I’ll never forget the day when my oldest daughter came to me complaining about a pain she had in her body. So, like any other “Super Dad” in my situation, I investigated her complaint by asking her to show daddy where it hurt. That’s when it happened... She turned to me and said, “Dad, it hurts me when I do this!” So I quickly & confidently delivered the only appropriate textbook response that such an occasion calls for... “Honey, if it hurts when you do this… then STOP DOING IT!”
It’s true, sometimes pain is a sign that you might be doing something wrong. But sometimes pain can be a signal that you’re actually doing something right. “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” 2 Corinthians 4:17This fall is a season for supernatural harvest, unlike we’ve ever seen. In fact, this month is jam packed with relevant outreach and powerful discipleship opportunities. My challenge to all of us is to press in and participate. Only, don’t be alarmed when you experience some pain in the process. You might even say…”It hurts when I do this.” But don’t let these “momentary troubles” slow you down, because an “eternal glory will far outweigh them all."

The World Was Watching

Here’s a question for those that are married, engaged, or soon to be... Is it ever too early to plan a date? Check your 2011 calendar & block out Friday & Saturday, October 14th & 15th, 2011. That’s the date our next Married Life Conference. Be there...
The World Was Watching... Like many of you, Ruth & I watched as the final Chilean miner was pulled up from the ground after being trapped w/ 32 others for more than 2 months. It was at that moment that the Holy Spirit reminded me... Down deep inside every human heart is a desire to do more than watch a rescue but to be the rescued. We have what the world is wanting & we’ve been rescued to become the rescuers. Ephesians 4:12 “...equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ.”
We were made for this,

A Meal Or More

Let’s bombard heaven with prayer this week for the 2010 Married Life Conference. The stage is set for this Spirit born/led weekend to send a shockwave of hope into the homes of our community. I’m asking you to take the “Meal or More Challenge.” Consider forgoing 1 meal (or more) this week as we fast & pray for the power of God to infuse every couple @ the Married Life Conference. Ask God to strengthen hurting & healthy homes. Ask the Lord to restore a God centered brokenness in all of our lives. "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. Matthew 7:7 So here’s a quick recap of an outstanding week… It began w/ the re-launch of our Sunday Night services, now called 4G (God Growth Group & Go). The 1st “G” in 4G stands for “God.” The God Night is a service set aside for heartfelt worship & prayer. So many of you came out expecting God and the end result was experiencing God’s powerful presence. May it remind us that our faith in God & pursuit of God will always ignite the atmosphere. @6am, on Monday morning, we gave away close to 200 cups of free Tim Hortons coffee @ our 3rd annual Moring Rush. A big cheer goes out to all of our baristas (expert coffee servers), for your hard work and willingness to do “whatever” to reach “whoever”. It was one of our best outreaches, caffeinated or otherwise, yet. Finally, our “Thursday @ Noon” prayer gatherings have been powerful. This past week was no exception. Make arrangements to join us here this Thursday for an hour of fervent prayer. Loving God Loving God’s People,PB

See You On Sunday... Nights

As great as this summer felt, the fall is feeling even greater. One of the exciting parts of the fall is the re:launch of Sunday Night Church. I’m inviting you to plug in “again” to Sunday Nights. Come experience one of the greatest growth opportunities offered @ Kings Way… Sunday Nights have always played a major role in the life of our church and now is no exception. Sunday nights will be taking on a fresh vision & purpose aimed at growing us into faithful followers. Our focus on Sunday night is simply called 4G. It stands for God, Growth, Group, & Go.
Sunday Nights will now look something like this...
The 1st Sunday night is our God Event: An evening for us to encounter God's amazing presence together, as a church family — worship, prayer, devotionals, & seeking God around the altars will mark these gatherings.
The 2nd Sunday night is our Growth Event: An evening focused on digging deeper, through in-depth Bible study & teaching.
The 3rd Sunday night is our Group Event : An evening of connecting with the church family. We will enjoy different gathering sizes/venues/ideas [i.e. Church Potlucks, DVD teaching series, etc.]
The 4th Sunday night is our Go Event: An evening of either equipping people to reach others for Christ OR an actual outreach event [i.e. OUTFLOW, Concerts, Movie, etc.]
“See you on Sunday"… Nights,
PB
